Common Kingfisher

A Small Carnivorous Bird Noted for its Striking Blue Plumage and Fishing Prowess

Alcedo atthis

This exquisite hand-drawn plate from the *L’Histoire Naturelle Reimagined* collection beautifully renders the Common Kingfisher (*Alcedo atthis*), a small carnivorous bird widely distributed across Eurasia and North Africa. The artwork captures this iconic species in its natural riverine habitat, showcasing its distinctive iridescent blue plumage, contrasted with its rich orange breast. The illustration highlights the kingfisher's remarkable fishing aptitude, often depicting it poised for a dive or with its catch, reflecting its specialised piscivorous diet. Accompanying anatomical details, possibly including osteological studies, provide invaluable insight into the unique morphology of this avian predator, renowned for its precision in hunting. The Common Kingfisher's biology is fascinating; its streamlined body, short tail, and disproportionately long, dagger-like bill are perfectly adapted for diving headfirst into freshwater bodies to capture small fish and aquatic insects. Its vibrant colouring, though striking to the human eye, actually serves as camouflage amidst the dappled light and reflections of its riparian environment. As a master of its ecological niche, *Alcedo atthis* embodies the delicate balance and intricate adaptations found in the natural world. This detailed and vibrant illustration, reminiscent of classic Victorian engravings, serves as a valuable resource for ornithological scholars, educators, and natural history enthusiasts alike. It is ideal for educational purposes, editorial features, or as a distinguished framed print, offering both scientific insight and aesthetic beauty. Its meticulous depiction of avian anatomy and behaviour makes it a significant contribution to the study of birdlife and natural history.
