Gadawan Kura

Traveling Performers in Nigerian cities with baboons

Papio anubis

A compelling plate from the ‘Hyena Men from Nigeria’ collection, titled ‘Gadawan Kura,’ depicts the itinerant performers of Nigerian cities, here accompanied by anubis baboons (Papio anubis). This hand-drawn illustration features a central figure, a handler, prominently displaying two anubis baboons on chains, offering a window into this traditional cultural practice. Surrounding vignettes meticulously detail various aspects of baboon anatomy, ecology, and their complex interactions with humans across both urban and natural West African environments. The artwork, rendered in sepia, ochre, and olive green, presents a nuanced study of this primate species within its cultural context. Anubis baboons are large, Old World monkeys native to West and Central Africa. They are highly adaptable omnivores, known for their distinctive olive-grey fur and dog-like muzzle, living in large, hierarchical troops. These intelligent primates exhibit complex social behaviours, including sophisticated communication and cooperative foraging. The illustration not only captures a specific cultural interaction but also serves as an anatomical and behavioural study, highlighting the baboon’s remarkable physical characteristics and adaptability. This illustration is ideally suited for educational contexts, providing valuable insight into anthropology, ethnography, and primatology. Its scholarly yet accessible style makes it perfect for editorial use in academic publications or natural history magazines. As a framed print, it offers a visually striking and thought-provoking piece, suitable for display in institutions or private collections interested in natural history, cultural studies, or urban wildlife, particularly those with an appreciation for Victorian-style scientific illustration.
