The wild raccoons of Chicago

Procyon lotor

A finely rendered synanthropic illustration from Atelier Curiosa Naturalis, this plate, "Urban Raccoons of Chicago," meticulously depicts *Procyon lotor* thriving within an urban landscape. It highlights the common raccoon's exceptional adaptability to city environments, showcasing various anatomical and behavioural traits essential for its survival. Key features include its digitigrade paws, facilitating agile movement across diverse terrains, and a prehensile tail, offering balance and support. The detailed representation of its heterodont dentition reflects its omnivorous diet, while the portrayal of nocturnal visual acuity underscores its success as a nocturnal scavenger. The artwork captures raccoons engaging in typical urban foraging behaviours, cleverly interacting with human infrastructure and discarded food sources. This provides visual insights into the ecological and behavioural strategies that enable *Procyon lotor* to coexist so successfully with human populations, making it a compelling subject for urban biodiversity studies. The artistic style echoes classic Victorian scientific illustration, blending meticulous detail with an evocative aesthetic. This print serves as an excellent resource for educational institutions, contributing to lessons on urban ecology, mammalian biology, and animal adaptation. Its detailed and accurate portrayal also makes it suitable for editorial use in scientific publications or natural history magazines. As a framed print, it offers a striking decorative piece for enthusiasts of wildlife art and urban natural history, celebrating the resilience of nature in anthropogenic environments.
